Rumor: Canon EOS 60D

Email Page | Comments

With the mid range DSLR lineup from Canon believed to be on a 12 month release cycle (Canon EOS 40D was released in August 2007, and the Canon EOS 50D in August 2008), it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect the Canon EOS 60D to arrive in August 2009.

Given complaints about the 50D, more megapixels are unlikely unless they go with a larger sensor. However with the cheaper Nikon D90 having Video, putting HD Video onto the Canon EOS 60D would be a fairly safe bet.

Below are a list of rumors regarding the Canon EOS 60D, newest first. Please rate how credible you believe these to be, and feel free to add your own comments/thoughts. If you have any more information, please email us at or click Rumors Wanted. We'll continue to add new rumors to this page as we come across them.

Full Frame, 8.5 fps at Spanish Store

Date: 8/24/2009
Source: NI

Rating: 2/5, Votes: 3

NI is linking to a Spanish store showing a picture of a XXD series body, with a caption that claims "CMOS, self cleaning sensor, 8.5 FPS 'Full frame'.

There has been a lot of noise recently about a new, cheaper full frame body coming, many suspect it may be called the 7D and the 60D will be kept as a crop camera, but so far we've seen no really solid sources to confirm either of these.

Photo of Top-Plate

NI captured an image that appeared briefly on a Tiawanese forum showing what is presumably the new top plate for the 60D. Very similar to the 50D, except with a M-Fn button, different dial, and thumb operated on-off switch under the dial.

Full Frame Sep 1st at D300s price

Date: 8/19/2009
Source: dpreview

Rating: 1.5/5, Votes: 6

The following was posted on dpreview forums (see source link below, about 3/4 way down the page):

for what it is worth my local camera shop says sept.1st will be an announcement of a full frame priced at the nikon d300 range...he says canon rep indicated that was the only way of getting low noise from a 15mb sensor.

This could be (a) 60D that is expected on Sep 1st, (b) the much rumored 7D, or (c) fiction.

For the 60D to keep the same resolution and jump to Full Frame means a major change of direction in that line. A 15mp Full Frame sensor means a new sensor, so if real a 7D would make the most sense, and an 15mp full frame camera from $1800 would be extremely interesting... if true.

RAW Video

Date: 8/10/2009
Source: NI

Rating: 1.7/5, Votes: 6

NI are pointing to the following comment made on a user forum:

"If you are looking at DSLR you should wait. I had a conversation with a Canon rep during the DGA meet last weekend. He advised me to sell my T1i before the second week of September. Apparently there will be a new one coming out with 24p and , possibly, RAW video out from Canon. Priced around $1500. S35 sensor and Eos mount for use with all Canon glass."

If real, this sounds like the 50D replacement.

More Specs

Date: 8/3/2009
Source: CR

Rating: 3.7/5, Votes: 9, Comments: 1

This time from Canon Rumors, supposedly from someone that has seen a brochure:

  • sensor seems to be a tweaked version of the current 15MP sensor (better DR, better high ISO IQ, eliminated pattern banding at high ISO)
  • 98%-coverage, 0.96x magnification VF
  • 3, 1150K-pixel, active-matrix, organic LED display
  • 19-pt., all-cross type area AF ellipse (basically, the current 1-series AF point layout w/o the 26-pt. assist AF pts.)
  • 1080p@30fps full HD video with full manual controls and contrast- detect AF, stereo audio inputs
  • 7.4FPS@14-bit mode (CIPA-standard testing method)
  • new DiGIC V is more than 2x faster than current DiGICIV, enables onboard processing of all those DPP functions still not done in-camera with the current cams (i.e., lateral CA correction, geometric distortion correction, better highlight & shadow detail extraction, plus new gDiffraction Eliminationh function: pixel-level contrast enhancement and sharpening to counteract aperture-related diffraction effects)
  • AE microadjustment; +/- 3 EV range with 1/6EV steps; separate saved corrections for Evaluative, CWA, Partial and Spot metering
  • new higher capacity, slightly higher-voltage (to drive the faster mechanicals & electrical readouts for the higher framerate), chipped Li-Polymer battery (LP-E7), with new, magnesium-alloy framed BG-E7 battery grip with AF-ON and mini-joystick selector buttons duplicated

APS-H

Date: 7/13/2009
Source: CR

Rating: 2.2/5, Votes: 14, Comments: 1

According to CR, they've learnt that Canon has been disappointed with 50D sales, and are now planing to target the Nikon D300 with a new XXD sized camera featuring an APS-H Sensor and a version of the AF system from the EOS-1.

If their source is correct, it will be capable of 6 f.p.s., have the build quality of the 5D Mark II, a new 12.1 megapixel sensor and MSRP of $1,999.

If real, this could be the 60D that is expected later this year, or possibly even the long-rumored EOS 7D.

Lord of Darkness

Date: 6/4/2009
Source: NI

Rating: 2/5, Votes: 7

Could this be the rumored Canon EOS 7D finally? (previous rumors put it at fall 2009, coming out instead of a Canon EOS 60D)

NI are showing an image and specs (see source link below) of a new Camera, allegedly not a 1D or 60D but an xD with an internal marketing name supposedly of 'The lord of darkness'.

Just looked at CanonRumors, looks like they got the same email, less picture.

Specs:

  • 16.8 M-pixel 1.3 Crop Factor [28MP FF equiv]
  • DIGIC IV
  • ISO 100-6400 (extension: 50 ISO & 25400 ISO)
  • 5 fps
  • 3.2in High Resolution Screen (LCD)
  • 19-point AF
  • HDMI Out
  • Liveview
  • HD Movie Mode including 720P (30FPS)
  • Viewfinder: 100% Coverage
  • Weather sealing as of 5D MKII
  • EF Lenses only

Price point would be anyone's guess - looking at the specs it would be somewhere in Nikon D300-D700 territory, so probably around the $2k mark (and presumably less than the Full Frame 5D Mark II).

They also claim that SD cards may replace CF cards in the lineup, and a larger/brighter viewfinder may also appear.

Dumbed down version of the new 1D autofocus system

Date: 4/13/2009
Source: CR

Rating: 2.9/5, Votes: 8

CR is reporting:

I received an email claiming the 60D will get a dumbed down version of the new 1D autofocus system. There will be more AF points and have a more pro “feel”.

The new autofocus system is apparently built on the current 1D system. It’s not going to be completely new. That doesn’t really worry me at all.

It's not clear if that means the AF system from the current 1D Mark III, or the rumored new AF system for the future 1D Mk IV. Gotta love rumors.

DIGIC V

Date: 4/3/2009
Source: CR

Rating: 3.8/5, Votes: 14, Comments: 2

According to CR, the Canon 60D will be a bigger step over the 50D than the 50D was over the 40D, will be APS-C, and it could be the camera that introduces DIGIC V.

Making it a bigger step is simple: Add video. And given the cameras either side of it in the lineup (5D Mark II and T1i/500D) have video already, I would be amazed if it didn't include video.

No specs were reported.

According to NI, the 60D Camera has been moved to an 18 month release cycle, which would put the 60D some time around Feb 2010. Economic conditions were cited as the reason, this information from a long time trusted source.

More on the 18 month cycle

Date: 2/28/2009
Source: NI

Rating: 3.5/5, Votes: 4

According to NI's trusted source, timing for the launch of the 60d is 'up for discussion' but internal pressures at Canon are to put it back on an 18 month cycle. This due to weaker overall demand and reduction in competitive pressure. The design is advanced and allows for a possible August/ September 2009 release but is 90+% likely to be delayed until January / February 2010.

This makes a lot of sense given the current economy (or lack thereof), however a lot will depend upon what Nikon, and to some extent Sony release in the mean time.

Rating: 3.3/5, Votes: 15, Comments: 2

According to Canon Rumors, the 60D will actually be called the 7D (supposedly to get away with naming confusion with Nikon; Surely at some point there will be a Nikon D7?)

It should be launched in Fall 2009, available by Christmas.

  • 15.1mp (apparently it will be the same sensor with some internal upgrades)
  • DIGIC V (DIGIC IV a stopover to a big advancement in processing)
  • New 13 Point AF

According to a poster on POTN, August 18th/19th is the date:

Canon will be announcing a New camera on the 18th day of August + or - 1 day. I am pretty sure that it will not be a 60d but a new pro sports body that will be available in October or November just in time for the Olympic Games.

How I am so sure about this...I can't tell but you'll see.

Must be true cuz it's posted on a forum, right? We have no way to confirm, but we are hearing the 19th from several sources now, although none of the sources are particularily credible unfortunately.
